Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland.
Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam.
Unknown to Afghanistan.
Eastern Afghanistan and Himalayas east to southern China, probably including northern Myanmar. Non-breeding northern India east to northern Indochina.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Has been considered closest member of present genus to Rhyacornis on account of tail-flirting behaviour. Birds from China reportedly paler, and sometimes separated as a geographical subspecies, sinae .
