Subspecies
Scutellate tarsi and slightly decurved bill render systematic position of genus uncertain. Subspecies intergrade.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

cambaiensis (Latham, 1790) - Pakistan, northern and western India and southern Nepal.
erythrurus (Lesson, R, 1831) - North-eastern India.
intermedius (Whistler & Kinnear, 1932) - Central India.
fulicatus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern India.
leucopterus (Lesson, R, 1840) - Sri Lanka.
