Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Fujian Niltava (Niltava davidi) and Rufous-vented Niltava (Niltava sumatrana) and has previously been considered conspecific with one or both.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • whistleri Ticehurst, 1926   -  North-western Himalayas of northern Pakistan and northern India.
  • sundara Hodgson, 1837   -  Central and eastern Himalayas and southern China (south-eastern Xizang, western Yunnan) south to Myanmar (except eastern and south-east).
  • denotata Bangs & Phillips, JC, 1914   -  Breeds eastern Myanmar and southern China (Shaanxi and western Hubei south to eastern Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou). Non-breeding south to northern Thailand and northern Indochina.
