Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

tricolor (Hodgson, 1845) - Western and central Himalayas of northern Pakistan and Kashmir east to central Nepal and south-western China (south-western Xizang).
minuta (Hume, 1872) - Himalayas from central and eastern Nepal east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh and western Assam) and southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
cerviniventris (Sharpe, 1879) - North-eastern India (Meghalaya, eastern Nagaland and south-eastern Assam south to Mizoram) and western Myanmar. Non-breeding in north-eastern Bangladesh.
diversa Vaurie, 1953 - Breeds central China (southern Gansu south to Yunnan), western and northern Myanmar and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin). Non-breeding southern China (southern Yunnan), northern Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
