Subspecies
Subspecies intergrade in central Himalayas (intermediates fairly frequent).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
superciliaris (Jerdon, 1840) - Breeds eastern Afghanistan east to central Himalayas. Non-breeding central and southern India.
aestigma (Gray, JE & Gray, GR, 1847) - Breeds central Himalayas east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, eastern Meghalaya, Manipur) and south-central China (south-eastern Xizang east to south-western Sichuan and northern Yunnan). Non-breeding northern and eastern India, central and eastern Myanmar, north-western Thailand and southern China (southern Yunnan).
