Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, arable land. From 1,600 - 4,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Myanmar, Nepal (B), Pakistan, Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a group, possibly a superspecies, with Sri Lanka Thrush (Zoothera imbricata), Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata), Russet-tailed Thrush (Zoothera heinei), Fawn-breasted Thrush (Zoothera machiki), New Britain Thrush (Zoothera talaseae), Makira Thrush (Zoothera margaretae), Guadalcanal Thicketbird (Megalurulus turipavae), Long-billed Thrush (Zoothera monticola) and Dark-sided Thrush (Zoothera marginata), perhaps including also Scaly Thrush (Zoothera dauma) and Long-tailed Thrush (Zoothera dixoni).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • whiteheadi (Blyth, 1842)   -  North-western Himalayas (northern Pakistan).
  • mollissima (Blyth, 1842)   -  Central and eastern Himalayas (from northern India) east to southern China (south-eastern Xizang, south-western Sichuan, northern Yunnan).
  • griseiceps (Delacour, 1930)   -  South-central China (northern Sichuan south to central and eastern Yunnan) and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sichuan Forest Thrush (Zoothera griseiceps).
