Subspecies
Taxonomic position of genus uncertain. Subspecies affinis sometimes regarded as a separate species. Nominate subspecies intergrades with pallidus in north-western India.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
pallidus Ticehurst, 1920 - Pakistan (eastern Baluchistan, Punjab, Sind) and north-western India (from foothills south to Gujarat and north-central Uttar Pradesh).
pondicerianus (Gmelin, 1789) - India (except north-west) and southern Nepal and Bangladesh east to Myanmar, Thailand (except south) and central and southern Laos.
affinis Blyth, 1847 - Sri Lanka. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sri Lanka Woodshrike (Tephrodornis affinis).
orientis Deignan, 1948 - Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
