Subspecies
Sometimes thought to form a superspecies with Burmese Shrike (Lanius collurioides), the two being separated geographically by R Brahmaputra. Other studies suggest close relationship either with Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) on basis of coloration or with Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus). Also resembles Lesser Grey Shrike (Lanius minor) in territorial flight display and Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius schach) in vocalizations. Subspecies intergrade in eastern Pakistan (north-western Punjab and Sind).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • nargianus Vaurie, 1955   -  Breeds south-eastern Turkmenistan, south-eastern Iran (Hormuzgan, Sistan and Baluchistan, probably also Khorasan), Afghanistan and Pakistan (Baluchistan east to Sind and Punjab).
  • vittatus Valenciennes, 1826   -  Southern and eastern Pakistan, Kashmir, India (except northern and north-east) and southern Nepal.
