Habitat
Large rivers and marshes. Occasionally smaller pools and ditches. From sea-level - 730 m.
Bangladesh (B), Cambodia, India (B), Laos (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Pakistan (B), Thailand (NB), Vietnam.
Vagrant to China (mainland) (B).
Pakistan (R Indus), Nepal and most of India east to south-western China (western Yunnan), and south through Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 25,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Breeding habitat destruction, egg colection, overfishing, flooding of nesting sites, over-harvesting of wetlands products are the main threats.
