Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Algeria, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B), Israel (B), Jordan (B) (NB), Kenya, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Oman (B), Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates (B), Yemen (B).

Vagrant to Iraq (NB), Senegal, Uganda.

Unknown to Afghanistan.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Double-banded Sandgrouse (Pterocles bicinctus) and Painted Sandgrouse (Pterocles indicus). Also closely related to Four-banded Sandgrouse (Pterocles quadricinctus).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • targius Geyr von Schweppenburg, 1916   -  Sahara and Sahel, from southern Morocco and Mauritania east to Chad.
  • lichtensteinii Temminck, 1825   -  Southern Israel, Sinai, south-eastern Egypt and Sudan to northern Ethiopia, northern Somalia and Socotra I.
  • sukensis Neumann, 1909   -  South-eastern Sudan and southern Ethiopia south to central Kenya.
  • ingramsi Bates & Kinnear, 1937   -  Yemen (Hadhramaut).
  • arabicus Neumann, 1909   -  Southern Arabia, east to southern Iran, southern Afghanistan and Pakistan (Baluchistan, Sind).
