Habitat
Hills and low mountains with crags and caves, open country with rocky outcrops. Also human settled landscapes.

Voice
Cooing calls, and gurgling sounds 'gut gut gut gut', more high-pitched and halting than that of Rock Pigeon (Columba livia).

Subspecies
Closely related to Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) and Snow Pigeon (Columba leuconota).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • turkestanica Buturlin, 1908   -  Semiretschensk, Zaissen and Russian Altai south through Turkestan to Balistan (Gilgit, Yasin, Hunza and Karakoram), and east to western Tibet and northern Himalayan slopes.
  • rupestris Pallas, 1811   -  Western Mongolia, Transbaikalia and Amurland south through Mongolia to eastern Tibet, western Sichuan, Helan Shan and Heilongjiang, and Korea.
