Sometimes placed with Papuan Parrotfinch (Erythrura papuana) and Blue-faced Parrotfinch (Erythrura trichroa) in a separate genus, Trichroa. Has been thought possibly to form a superspecies with Tricoloured Parrotfinch (Erythrura tricolor) and Blue-faced Parrotfinch (Erythrura trichroa).
