Subspecies
Birds on Basilan, currently included in subspecies malindangensis, possibly belong to an as yet undescribed subspecies.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

luzonensis Alcasid & Gonzales, 1968 - East-central and southern Luzon (Sierra Madre Mts and Mt Isarog), in northern Philippine Is.
philippinensis (Steere, 1890) - Samar, Biliran and Leyte, in east-central Philippines.
malindangensis Rand & Rabor, 1957 - Northern and western Mindanao (including Mt Malindang) and Basilan, in southern Philippines.
clarae Blasius, 1890 - Central Mindanao (Davao).
