Proposed subspecies dubia (described from Dinagat) seems insufficiently distinct from nominate to be tenable.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• jefferyi Sharpe, 1876   -  Northern and central Luzon, in northern Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Luzon Sunbird (Aethopyga jefferyi).
• pulcherrima Sharpe, 1876   -  Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Dinagat, Siargao, Mindanao and Basilan.
• decorosa (McGregor, 1907)   -  Bohol. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bohol Sunbird (Aethopyga decorosa).
