Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Lina's Sunbird (Aethopyga linaraborae).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

malindangensis Rand & Rabor, 1957 - Mt Malindang, in western Mindanao (southern Philippines).
boltoni Mearns, 1905 - Mt Kitanglad, Mt McKinley and Mt Apo, and presumably Mt Pasian, in central Mindanao.
tibolii Kennedy, Gonzales & Miranda, 1997 - Mt Busa and Mt Matutum, and presumably MtParker and L Sebu, in southern Mindanao.
