Subspecies
Tongue morphology similar to that of Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker (Dicaeum melanozanthum) and Red-striped Flowerpecker (Dicaeum australe). Variation between some subspecies quite well marked, and this species could perhaps be split into two or even three species.
Proposed subspecies lagunae, from Pangil (Laguna Province), in south-central Luzon, insufficiently distinct from obscurum to warrant recognition.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
obscurum Ogilvie-Grant, 1894 - North-western, central and southern Luzon and Catanduanes, in northern Philippines.
cagayanense Rand & Rabor, 1967 - Sierra Madre Mts (including Mt Cagua), in north-eastern Luzon.
pontifex Mayr, 1946 - Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Panaon, Bohol, Dinagat, and Mindanao (except Zamboanga Peninsula), in east-central and southern Philippines.
mindanense Tweeddale, 1877 - Zamboanga Peninsula, in western Mindanao.
hypoleucum Sharpe, 1876 - Sulu Archipelago (Malamaui, Basilan, Jolo, Siasi, Tawi-Tawi, Bongao, Sanga Sanga and Manuk Manka).
