Subspecies
Possibly closely related to Everett's White-eye (Zosterops everetti). Subspecies innominatus sometimes merged with luzonicus.

Proposed subspecies sierramadrensis (from Mt Cagua, in extreme north-eastern Luzon) synonymized with innominatus.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • meyleri McGregor, 1907   -  Camiguin Norte (north of Luzon), in extreme northern Philippines.
  • aureiloris Ogilvie-Grant, 1895   -  Northern and north-western Luzon.
  • innominatus Finsch, 1901   -  North-eastern and central Luzon.
  • luzonicus Ogilvie-Grant, 1895   -  South-eastern Luzon (Mt Mayon, Sorsogon) and Catanduanes.
  • mindorensis Parkes, 1971   -  Northern Mindoro (recorded from northern slope of Mt Halcon).
  • nigrorum Tweeddale, 1878   -  Cresta de Gallo, Masbate, Ticao, Caluya, Panay and Negros.
  • richmondi McGregor, 1904   -  Cagayan (Cagayancillo), in Sulu Sea west of Negros.
  • catarmanensis Rand & Rabor, 1969   -  Camiguin Sur.
