Subspecies
Often treated as conspecific with Zamboanga Bulbul (Hypsipetes rufigularis), but is much smaller, and no evidence of intergradation where ranges approach each other. Distribution and validity of subspecies provisional. Some are weakly differentiated (e.g. saturatior) and may not warrant recognition, and others possibly represent separate species. A thorough review is required.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • philippinus (Forster, 1795)   -  Northern Philippines (Luzon, Corregidor, Fortune, Lubang, Polillo, Calagua Is, Marinduque, Banton, Catanduanes).
  • mindorensis (Steere, 1890)   -  Mindoro and Semirara.
  • parkesi duPont, 1980   -  Burias.
  • guimarasensis (Steere, 1890)   -  West-central Philippines (Ticao, Masbate, Carabao, Borocay, Panay, Gigantes, Calagna-an, Sicogon, Bantayan, Guimaras, Negros, Verde).
  • saturatior (Hartert, 1916)   -  East-central and southern Philippines (Samar, Buad, Balut, Biliran, Leyte, Cebu, Olango, Mactan, Bohol, Panaon, Calicoan, Mindanao except Zamboanga Peninsula, Cabo, Talicud, Pujada).
