Subspecies
Subspecies superciliaris morphologically distinctive and if found to be equally distinctive vocally, may perhaps be better treated as a separate species. Subspecies parvimaculatus only rather weakly differentiated from nominate, Subspecies shemleyi poorly known, and validity has been questioned.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

luzoniensis (Kittlitz, 1832) - Luzon and Catanduanes, in northern Philippines.
parvimaculatus (McGregor, 1910) - Polillo I.
shemleyi duPont, 1976 - Marinduque.
superciliaris (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) - Masbate, Negros, Panay and Ticao. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Visayan Shama (Kittacincla superciliaris).
