Habitat
Dense understorey of lowland primary and secondary forest. Occasionally, selectively logged forest and forest on limestone karst. Usually below 900 m but occasionally up to 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Philippines (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction through logging and mining is the main threat.

Voice
A quiet, high-pitched, descending three-note call. Song comprises beautiful, watery, warbling phrases.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

samarensis (Bourns & Worcester, 1894) - Samar and Leyte, in east-central Philippines.
basilanica (Sharpe, 1877) - Dinagat, Mindanao and Basilan, in southern Philippines.

Similar Species
Male similar to female Little Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula westermanni) but differs in darker upperparts, supercilium, habits and behaviour. Female similar to Cryptic Flycatcher (Ficedula crypta) which lacks an eye-ring.
