Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, inland wetlands. Also, heavily degraded former forest. From sea-level - 750 m.

Range (Guide)

Philippines (B).

The islands of Luzon, Negros, Sibuyan, Samar, Dinagat, Mindanao, Basilan, Mantibuan and Tawitawi in the Philippines.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction through logging and mining, road developments, and planting of exotic trees for paper production are the main threats.

Voice
A distinctive, fast, high-pitched 'tee-tee-tee'. Also typical rasping uttered in alarm.

Subspecies
Racial identity of Tawitawi population uncertain; tentatively included in nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

coelestis Tweeddale, 1877 - Philippines: Luzon, Samar, Dinagat, Mindanao, Basilan and Tawitawi.
rabori Rand, 1970 - Sibuyan and Negros, in central Philippines.

Similar Species
Black-naped Monarch (Hypothymis azurea) and Short-crested Monarch (Hypothymis helenae) which differ in black facial markings and generally show less of a crest.
