Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sulphur-bellied Whistler (Pachycephala sulfuriventer) and Bornean Whistler (Pachycephala hypoxantha).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

philippinensis (Walkden, 1872) - Luzon and Catanduanes (northern Philippines).
fallax (McGregor, 1904) - Calayan, in northern Philippines.
illex (McGregor, 1907) - Camiguin Norte, in northern Philippines.
apoensis (Mearns, 1905) - East-central and southern Philippines (Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Dinagat, most of Mindanao, Pujada).
boholensis Parkes, 1966 - Bohol (south-central Philippines).
siquijorensis Rand & Rabor, 1957 - Siquijor (south-central Philippines).
basilanica (Mearns, 1909) - Western Mindanao (Zamboanga Peninsula) and Basilan, in southern Philippines.
