Proposed subspecies quartus (from Duminagat, Mt Malindang, on Mindanao) considered synonymous with hachisuka.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• validirostris Ogilvie-Grant, 1894   -  Northern Luzon (Cordillera and northern Sierra Madre), in northern Philippines.
• tertius Salomonsen, 1953   -  Northern Mindoro (Mt Halcon and Mt Dulungan), in north-central Philippines.
• hachisuka Ripley, 1949   -  Mindanao (Mt Malindang, mountains of Misamis Oriental, Mt Kitanglad and Civolig, Mt Apo), in southern Philippines.
