Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Asian Fairy-bluebird (Irena puella). Species name sometimes given as cyanogaster, but this is an unjustified emendation.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

cyanogastra Vigors, 1831 - Luzon, Polillo and Catanduanes.
ellae Steere, 1890 - Samar, Leyte and Bohol.
hoogstraali Rand, 1948 - Dinagat and Mindanao.
melanochlamys Sharpe, 1877 - Basilan.
