Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Dark-eared Brown-Dove (Phapitreron cinereiceps), but the two have been found to exist sympatrically on eastern slope of Mt McKinley, Mindanao.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • amethystinus Bonaparte, 1855   -  Northern, eastern and south-eastern Philippines, on Luzon, Polillo, Alabat, Catanduanes, Samar, Leyte, Bohol, Panaon, Dinagat and Mindanao.
  • imeldae De la Paz, 1976   -  North-central Philippines, on Marinduque.
  • maculipectus (Bourns & Worcester, 1894)   -  East-central Philippines, on Negros. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-breasted Brown-dove (Phapitreron maculipectus).
  • frontalis (Bourns & Worcester, 1894)   -  East-central Philippines, on Cebu (possibly extinct). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cebu Brown-dove (Phapitreron frontalis).
