Subspecies
Relationships uncertain, but resembles some taxa of Mantanani Scops-Owl (Otus mantananensis). Formerly treated as subspecies of Eurasian Scops-Owl (Otus scops) or Oriental Scops-Owl (Otus sunia), but very different from both in morphology. Birds in lowlands of western Mindoro recently attributed to this species, but differing vocally from other populations, now shown to be subspecies mindorensis of Philippine Hawk-Owl (Ninox philippensis).
