Habitat
Small islands and coastal lowland sites and also inland foothills. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Philippines (B).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Deforestation through illegal logging and clearance for re-planting with exotic trees for paper production is the main threat.

A rapid series of short, clear whistles, descending in pitch and tailing off.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • nesydrionetes (Parkes, 1966)   -  Central Philippines, on Tablas, Romblon and Sibuyan; probably this subspecies on Masbate and Sicogon.
  • nigrorum (Hachisuka, 1934)   -  Samar, Calicoan, Biliran, Leyte, Negros, Cebu, Siquijor and Bohol.
  • mindanensis (Parkes, 1966)   -  Mindanao.
  • winchelli (Sharpe, 1877)   -  Basilan.
  • alfredi (Oustalet, 1890)   -  Sulu Archipelago (Bongao, Sanga Sanga, Papahag, Tawitawi, Jolo).


Similar Species
Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) which has paler blue-green upperparts and clear white collar.
