Status VU
Deforestation through illegal logging and clearance for re-planting with exotic trees for paper production is the main threat.

Subspecies
Genus often merged into Halcyon.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

nesydrionetes (Parkes, 1966) - Central Philippines, on Tablas, Romblon and Sibuyan; probably this subspecies on Masbate and Sicogon.
nigrorum (Hachisuka, 1934) - Samar, Calicoan, Biliran, Leyte, Negros, Cebu, Siquijor and Bohol.
mindanensis (Parkes, 1966) - Mindanao.
winchelli (Sharpe, 1877) - Basilan.
alfredi (Oustalet, 1890) - Sulu Archipelago (Bongao, Sanga Sanga, Papahag, Tawitawi, Jolo).

Similar Species
Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) which has paler blue-green upperparts and clear white collar.
