Subspecies
Relationship with Plumed Longbill (Oedistoma iliolophus), uncertain, and further genetic work required in order to reveal true taxonomic positions of the two. Described subspecies flavipectus (southern New Guinea eastern from Etna Bay) and olivascens (north-eastern coast eastern from Huon Peninsula) considered synonyms of nominate.

waigeuense Salvadori, 1876 - Waigeo, in northern West Papuan Is.
pygmaeum Salvadori, 1876 - Southern West Papuan Is (Misool) and mainland New Guinea.
meeki (Hartert, 1896) - D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Goodenough I, Fergusson I), off south-eastern New Guinea.
flavipectus Salomonsen, 1966 - Southern New Guinea (Etna Bay to Milne Bay).
olivascens Salomonsen, 1966 - Northern coast of south-eastern New Guinea (Milne Bay to Huon Peninsula).
