Subspecies
Has been suggested to form a superspecies with Lesser Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor), Greater Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea apoda), Goldie's Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea decora) and Red Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea rubra). Hybridization with Lesser Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor), Greater Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea apoda), Emperor Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea guilielmi) and Blue Bird-of-paradise (Paradisornis rudolphi) has been recorded. Subspecies salvadorii sometimes treated as synonym of nominate.

Additional proposed subspecies granti (described from area inland from Huon Gulf) sometimes recognized, but probably better considered a linking population between intermedia and augustaevictoriae. Subspecies intermedia and augustaevictoriae hybridize in region of lower Mambare R.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • salvadorii Mayr & Rand, 1935   -  Southern and south-eastern New Guinea from Fly/Strickland watershed eastern (extending into interior highland valleys, e.g. Wahgi and Tari Valleys) to Cloudy Bay.
  • augustaevictoriae Cabanis, 1888   -  Upper Ramu R and Huon Peninsula (and interior valleys to south, i.e. those of Markham, Wafa, Watut and Bulolo rivers), and also south-east to Waria R watershed and coastally to lower Mambare R.
  • intermedia De Vis, 1894   -  Northern coast of south-eastern New Guinea from lower Mambare R east to Collingwood Bay.
  • raggiana Sclater, 1873   -  Southern watershed of south-eastern New Guinea from Cloudy Bay east to Milne Bay, and into northern watershed as far as Goodenough Bay or Cape Vogel.
