Originally considered conspecific with Regent Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii), but subsequently discovered to occur sympatrically with that species. Both are members of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus), Bare-throated Whistler (Pachycephala nudigula), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror), Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala implicata), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica), Tongan Whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons), Black-tailed Whistler (Pachycephala melanura) and Golden-backed Whistler (Pachycephala aurea).
