Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical heavily degraded former forest.

Papua New Guinea (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Rufous-sided Honeyeater (Ptiloprora erythropleura), Mayr's Honeyeater (Ptiloprora mayri) and Black-backed Honeyeater (Ptiloprora perstriata). May form a superspecies with Mayr's Honeyeater (Ptiloprora mayri).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • guisei (De Vis, 1894)   -  Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea, eastern from Bismarck and Kubor Ranges and Herzog Mts.
  • umbrosa Mayr, 1931   -  Adelbert Mts, Mt Bosavi, Huon Peninsula (Saruwaged Mts), Schrader Range and eastern Highlands (western at least to Tari), in north-eastern and eastern New Guinea.
