Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Okinawa Rail (Hypotaenidia okinawae) and New Britain Rail (Hypotaenidia insignis).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

torquatus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Philippines.
celebensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832) - Sulawesi and adjacent islands.
sulcirostris (Wallace, 1863) - Peleng (Banggai) and Sula Is, off east-central Sulawesi.
kuehni (Rothschild, 1902) - Tukangbesi Is, Seast of Sulawesi.
limarius (Peters, JL, 1934) - Salawati I and northern Irian Jaya.
