Subspecies
Often placed in a species-group with Bismarck Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula melanochroa) and Collared Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula mullerii). Affinities have also been suggested between these species and the Barking Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula latrans) superspecies. Validity of subspecies rubiensis is questionable.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
pinon (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) - Western Papuan Is (Misool, Salawati, Batanta, Waigeo) and Aru Is to Vogelkop and central-southern New Guinea (R Mimika to Hall Sound).
jobiensis (Schlegel, 1871) - Yapen I, northern New Guinea (east to Huon Gulf) and islands offnorthern coast (Manam, Karkar, Bagabag).
rubiensis (A. B. Meyer, 1884) - Southern shores of Geelvink Bay, and coasts of Onin Peninsula east to Etna Bay; south-eastern New Guinea (eastern from R Kumusi and R Aroa).
salvadorii (Tristram, 1882) - D'Entrecasteax Is (Goodenough, Fergusson) and Louisiade Archipelago (Misima, Tagula, Rossel). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Louisiade Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula salvadorii).
