Subspecies
Closely allied to Purple-tailed Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula rufigaster), Cinnamon-bellied Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula basilica) and Finsch's Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula finschii), and sometimes considered to belong to that superspecies.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • chalconota (Salvadori, 1874)   -  Mountains of Vogelkop (north-western New Guinea).
  • smaragdina Mayr, 1931   -  Mountains of New Guinea (except Vogelkop), from Weyland to Owen Stanley Mts and mountains of Huon Peninsula.
