Subspecies
Very closely related to the largely sympatric Pink-spotted Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus perlatus) although the two species tend to be ecologically separated. Other members of the species-group are Tanna Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus tannensis), Orange-fronted Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus aurantiifrons), Wallace's Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus wallacii) and, in some accounts, Superb Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus superbus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- ornatus (Schlegel, 1871) - Arfak Mts and coast of Vogelkop between Amberbaki and Warbusi (north-western New Guinea).
- gestroi D'Albertis & Salvadori, 1875 - New Guinea from Cyclops Mts and Onin Peninsula eastwards. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Ornate Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus gestroi).
