Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 1,830 m.

Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

New Britain.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging and deforestation are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Australian Masked-Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae), Manus Masked-Owl (Tyto manusi), Lechuza de las Tanimbar (Tyto sororcula), Taliabu Masked-Owl (Tyto nigrobrunnea) and Minahasa Masked-Owl (Tyto inexspectata).
