French Polynesia (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 100 - 500 (2010) and increasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation, predation by introduced cats and rats (particularly black rat Rattus rattus), are the main threats.

Voice
A gruff, hoarse 'rouw-rouw-rouw' and variety of quieter notes.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered a subspecies of Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica). Forms a superspecies with Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica), Micronesian Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula oceanica) and perhaps Marquesan Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula galeata). Subspecies wilkesii sometimes considered invalid.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

aurorae (Peale, 1848) - Makatea (Tuamotu Archipelago).
wilkesii (Peale, 1849) - Tahiti (Society Is).
