Subspecies
Genus formerly subsumed into Aimophila. However, recent molecular studies indicate that it is close to Tumbes Sparrow (Rhynchospiza stolzmanni), and only distantly related to other species currently included in Aimophila.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
dabbenei (Hellmayr, 1912) - South-eastern Bolivia south to north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán).
strigiceps (Gould, 1839) - South-central Paraguay south to north-central Argentina (to Córdoba and northern Buenos Aires).
