Subspecies
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Bismarck White-eye (Zosterops hypoxanthus). Indeed, nominate subspecies is strikingly similar and may perhaps be an older offshoot of the "Black-crowned White-eye (Zosterops atrifrons) group". Subspecies sometimes treated as two separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
fuscicapilla Salvadori, 1875 - Mountains of western and central New Guinea (Tamrau, Arfak, Fakfak, Wandammen Mts, Foja Mts, western Central Ranges, Cyclops Mts and northern Coastal Range).
crookshanki Mayr & Rand, 1935 - Goodenough I (d'Entrecasteaux Is). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Oya Tabu White-eye (Zosterops crookshanki).
