Subspecies
Pyriglena leuconota (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was previously split into Pyriglena leuconota, Pyriglena castanoptera and Pyriglena pacifica following Stotz et al. (1996), but this treatment is no longer adopted, following SACC (2005).
Forms a superspecies with Fringe-backed Fire-eye (Pyriglena atra) and White-shouldered Fire-eye (Pyriglena leucoptera), and sometimes treated as conspecific. Populations of present species appear to involve more than one species. Conversely, some subspecies may represent merely clinal variation in plumage. Further study is required.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

castanoptera Chubb, C, 1916 - Andean slopes in southern Colombia (eastern slope of central range, western slope of eastern range in Huila, eastern slope of eastern range southern from Cauca and Caquetá), Ecuador (eastern slope) and northern Peru (north of R Marañón in Piura, Cajamarca and northern Amazonas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chestnut-backed Fire-eye (Pyriglena castanoptera).
