Vagrant to New Zealand.

Alejandro Selkirk I (formerly Más Afuera I) in Juan Fernández Is. Breeds only on Juan Fernandez Island off South America, in subtropical and high-salinity tropical waters of the southern Pacific Ocean. In the non-breeding season migrates to the subtropical North Pacific.

Subspecies
May form superspecies with White-winged Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera), Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti) and (?) Bonin Petrel (Pterodroma hypoleuca). Sometimes includes Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti).
