Voice
Female, a loud, penetrating quack, repeated rapidly like a hoarse laugh, with the pitch falling. Male, a loud burp 'gdeeu'. Slightly deeper and harsher in tone than the Grey Teal (Anas gracilis).

Nest
In a hollow limb or a hole of a tree, or a scrape in the ground in vegetation near water.
Eggs (Guide)
Usually 7 - 10; close-grained and smooth, cream; ellipsoidal; 52 x 37 mm. Incubation: 27 days; by female.
Young
Precocial, nidifugous. Fledge in about 56 days. Tended by both parents.
Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Nettion. Forms superspecies with Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica). Hybridization recorded with subspecies gracilis of Auckland Teal (Anas aucklandica).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Females and juveniles with Grey Teal (Anas gracilis) which is slightly lighter in appearance, and is off-white from the lower face to neck.
