Subspecies
Some authors include present species in a superspecies with White-faced Partridge (Arborophila orientalis) and Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus), and all three are sometimes considered conspecific. Others attribute morphological similarities to convergent evolution. Sometimes Sichuan Partridge (Arborophila rufipectus) or Bornean Partridge (Arborophila hyperythra), or both, also included in the superspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
javanica (Gmelin, 1879) - Mountains of western Java.
bartelsi Siebers, 1929 - Mountains of west-central Java.
lawuana Bartels, 1938 - Mountains of east-central Java.
