Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Moorland Francolin (Scleroptila psilolaema ) and Shelley's Francolin (Scleroptila shelleyi ). Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Scleroptila with Grey-winged Francolin (Scleroptila afra ), Moorland Francolin (Scleroptila psilolaema ), Ring-necked Francolin (Scleroptila streptophora ), Red-winged Francolin (Scleroptila levaillantii ), Shelley's Francolin (Scleroptila shelleyi ) and Finsch's Francolin (Scleroptila finschi ).
Several other subspecies have been described, but their validity is doubtful: pallidor and kalaharica normally included in nominate levaillantoides ; cunenensis in jugularis ; and archeri in lorti . Subspecies gutturalis (incorporating lorti ) has been considered to constitute a separate species. Francolinus gariepensis is a synonym for present species.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
gutturalis (Smith, 1836) - Northern Ethiopia.
lorti (Sharpe, 1897) - Sudan east through southern Ethiopia to Somalia, and south to Uganda.
jugularis (Büttikofer, 1889) - South-western Angola and northern Namibia.
levaillantoides (A. Smith, 1836) - Eastern Namibia, southern Botswana, northern and western South Africa and Lesotho.
archeri (Sclater, WL, 1927) - Southern Ethiopia, south-eastern Sudan, northern Uganda, north-western Kenya.
pallidior (Neumann, 1908) - Northern Namibia.
levalliantoides (Smith, A, 1836) - Southern Botswana to eastern Namibia, Lesotho and northern South Africa.
