Subspecies
Closely related to Pale-legged Warbler (Myiothlypis signata) and Black-crested Warbler (Myiothlypis nigrocristata). Subspecies eophrys formerly considered a subspecies of Black-crested Warbler (Myiothlypis nigrocristata), but closer in morphology to present species and linked to nominate subspecies by intermediate striaticeps. Subspecies richardsoni sometimes treated as a separate species, but linked to nominate by intermediate subspecies quindianus. A specimen from Colombia (at 3400 m) may represent an additional, undescribed, subspecies, apparently resembling nominate subspecies, but may be an undescribed subspecies of Pale-legged Warbler (Myiothlypis signata).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • richardsoni (Chapman, 1912)   -  Pacific slope of western Andes of Colombia.
  • quindiana Meyer de Schauensee, 1946   -  Central Andes of Colombia (Caldas and Tolima).
  • luteoviridis (Bonaparte, 1845)   -  Eastern Andes from south-western Venezuela (Mérida) south to Ecuador.
  • striaticeps Cabanis, 1873   -  Andes of northern and central Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Peruvian Citrine Warbler (Myiothlypis striaticeps).
  • euophrys (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876)   -  Andes from southern Peru south to central Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bolivian Citrine Warbler (Myiothlypis euophrys).
