Subspecies
Sometimes thought to form a superspecies with Slaty Brush-Finch (Atlapetes schistaceus) and Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch (Atlapetes nationi), and often considered conspecific with one or the other. Subspecies celicae, known from a single specimen, may be an aberrant individual of simonsi.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
celicae (Taczanowski, 1883) - Western Loja (region of Celica), in south-western Ecuador.
simonsi (Sharpe, 1900) - Central and eastern Loja, in southern Ecuador.
seebohmi (Taczanowski, 1883) - Pacific slope of Andes in north-western Peru (south to Ancash).
