Subspecies
Subspecies crassus occasionally placed in White-rimmed Brush-finch (Atlapetes leucopis), or treated as a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

crassus (Taczanowski, 1874) - Western Andes of Colombia (Caldas, Valle and Nari�o) and western Ecuador (Pichincha and El Oro). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Choco Brush-finch (Atlapetes crassus).
tricolor (Taczanowski, 1874) - Andes of central Peru (La Libertad south to Jun��n and Cuzco).
