Subspecies
Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops) and Black-lored Babbler (Turdoides sharpei) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include sharpei as a subspecies of Black-faced Babbler (Turdoides melanops).
Proposed subspecies clamosus (Rift Valley in Kenya) merged with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
sharpei (Reichenow, 1891) - Extreme eastern DRCongo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda (except north), south-western Kenya and north-western and western Tanzania.
vepres Meinertzhagen, R, 1937 - Nanyuki area, on slopes of Mt Kenya (central Kenya).
