Prinia burnesii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split into Rufous-vented Grass-babbler (Laticilla burnesii) and Swamp Grass-babbler (Laticilla cinerascens) by Rasmussen and Anderton (2005): this treatment is under review by the BirdLife Taxonomic Working Group.
Forms a species pair with Rufous-vented Grass-babbler (Laticilla burnesii), both being vocally distinct from other members of genus. The two were formerly considered conspecific, and songs are remarkably similar, but they differ in size, tail length, bill and plumage coloration, and egg colour (in present species slaty green, with profuse blackish-brown speckling), and are also geographically isolated from each other.
