Subspecies
Formerly regarded as conspecific with Black-throated Wren (Pheugopedius atrogularis), but the two are quite distinct in plumage and song and are widely separated geographically.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
xerampelinus (Bangs, 1910) - Pacific slope of extreme eastern Panama (Darién).
spadix (Bangs, 1910) - Pacific lowlands of Colombia from Chocó south to Nariño, in northern also extending east to middle Magdalena Valley (in Santander).
